NBA 2K25 shutting down later this month

NBA 2K25, last year’s installment in the well-loved pro basketball franchise, will be removed from digital storefronts at the end of October. The game just celebrated its second anniversary on September 4.

Game studio and Take-Two subsidiary 2K announced the game’s removal and multiplayer mode shutdown in a Steam post on October 1.

“There’s the final buzzer, it’s time for NBA 2K25 to be discontinued as of December 31, 2026. This game will no longer be available for purchase as of October 30, 2026.” The post then clarifies that, “[i]f you already own the game, you will still be able to redownload and play offline modes.”

While offline modes will stick around, 2K confirmed that multiplayer and online modes, including MyCAREER and MyTeam, will no longer be accessible. Players also won’t be able to earn in-game currency.

“As of January 1, 2027, you’ll no longer be able to play multiplayer games or access any online game modes. MyCAREER and MyTEAM will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to earn Virtual Currency (VC). While you will still be able to enjoy Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, any features that require a connection to 2K servers will be unavailable. This includes multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing.

“We thank you for being a part of our community and hope you continue to enjoy NBA 2K!”

If you weren’t sure what player sentiment was, it’s…not optimal. The “Server Sunset” post on Steam shows no likes and nearly 100 comments, many shocked by the $70 game’s super-short playability window.

“Only 2 years of online support? What a shame,” wrote one Steam user.

“I really don’t understand why they can’t just convert to skill points and keep the Career and Team modes offline,” lamented another. “Just feels greedy to me.”

Another user contextualized the game’s winding down, linking an official 2K Support webpage that lays out launch and retirement plans for dozens of 2K titles. NBA 2K releases listed (dating back to 2K22) all show a two-year online services timeline.

That being said, some other 2K games show much wider accessibility windows. PGA TOUR 2K23 launched in October 2022, but “[o]nline features and services are scheduled to be available until 12 March 2027.” Online features in other releases, like 2023’s LEGO 2K Drive, will remain accessible until May 2027, doubling those in NBA 2K25.

At the time of writing, NBA 2K25 is available on Steam at $69.99. The Nintendo Switch digital store listing, shown at $59.99, confirms the game “will no longer be available for purchase as of 10/30/2026.”
