Swordsmith sim Bladesong gets sharp new content update

Bladesong, the viral swordsmith business simulator from developer Sun and Serpent and publisher Mythwright, just got a biiiiig update, bringing an improved user interface (UI), ray tracing capabilities, new sword customization options, bug fixes, and more to Eren Keep’s most dedicated smiths.

The Bladesong team announced the news in a Steam post. “We hope you had a great Halloween weekend filled with tricks, treats, and perhaps some tinkering at the forge! A new Bladesong update is here,” herald the game’s developers.

The lengthy post breaks down what fans can expect when they return to their forge, offering a detailed look at the new user interface, including “how the library is displayed and, to some extent, how it functions.”

The game’s last major update, released in August, introduced Chapter 3, a brand-new character, quality-of-life changes, updated visuals, and sword cosmetics, among other content.

Ready to return to your forge, smith? Check out the main in-game changes coming to Bladesong:

Library UI

Our library UI up to this point was a long list of sword parts and materials in the left sidebar. As the library grew and commissions in Story Mode became more complex, the sidebar became increasingly contested real estate, leaving too little room for the library to breathe.

“In this update, we present a complete rework of how the library is displayed and, to some extent, how it functions.”

Developers explain that the sword parts library is no longer shown in sidebar form; instead, the library “occupies the bottom center of the screen. Instead of displaying all sword parts at once, you find what you need through hierarchical categories.”

Additionally, “[p]arts and materials are now separated,” which the developers admit had a satisfying ripple effect. Thanks to the separation, players can “choose a part from the library and then assign a material to it before attaching it.

“Alternatively, you can choose a material first, then pick a part from the library to spawn with that material. The library remembers your material choice, so future engravings, for example, will be spawned in your chosen material.”

And the change I’m most excited for? Improvements to the in-game search function! Devs say the tool has “gotten more powerful,” and “supports searching by name, type, and the book a part belongs to.

“If you’re in the mood for browsing, you may search for * to show all parts at once.”

New Sword Parts

EUREKA! The fan-fave Horse Head pommel got a Halloween facelift, devs say. 3D artist Resuru “went off the rails and created the Essekor Mare, a depiction of a chaos-riddled, mutated horse trampling the dead grass of Bladesong’s wasteland.

“It comes with a new sword part book called ‘The Savage Tooth’, containing a dozen teeth modeled closely after canine jaws.” Sick.

Raytracing

That ghastly new pommel’s gonna really instill fear in some hearts with ray tracing! With a raytracing-capable GPU, players can add even more flair to their flashy designs with dynamic and bright reflections, refraction, glows, glimmers, and lights.

Enable ray tracing in the game’s options to give it a whirl.

The team notes in its update that ray tracing is “an experimental feature,” adding that the “first activation may take up to 30 seconds while shaders compile.” Devs encourage players experiencing any crashes to reach out via Discord.

Other adjustments

In Creative Mode, players can change their blade material the same way they change part materials: “pick a material from the library, click on the blade, and you’re done.”

Devs say sword-bending improvements make rotated sword pieces “behave more intuitively” at first bend. The addition of a “subtle grid” allows players to better see the bend plane.

The Bladesong team also revealed they “worked on the audio for Chapter 3 and fixed a couple of bugs,” crediting player feedback for the improvements.

The update closes with a subtle reveal. “Your continued support and enthusiasm for Bladesong mean a lot to us. Please keep sharing your thoughts and suggestions, and join our Discord, where we’ll be hosting a Community Challenge very soon.

“Meanwhile, we’ll go back to working on Chapter 4.”
