Montabi: Creature-collector deckbuilder out now on PC, consoles

Montabi, the colorful creature-collector roguelike deckbuilder from Indonesian developer Mankibo and publisher Akupara Games, has officially landed on PC and console. Montabi was first revealed in Spring 2025, but really made a splash when it was featured during Summer Game Fest SEA Games Showcase and Steam Next Fest this past June.

“Montabi has truly been a labor of love,” a heartfelt statement in the game’s latest Steam update reads.

“Every illustration, animation, and music track was created by our incredibly talented artists and composer. From the earliest concept sketches to the final soundtrack, everything was crafted by human hands with passion and dedication.”

In Montabi, play as a beleaguered battler on a quest to save their beloved battle-ready critter, called Montabi, from a relentless gang’s grasp. Journey through several areas of a bustling city to save your Montabi sidekick; every stop on the game’s sprawling map offers a brutal battle, rejuvenating cafe break, nail-biting random encounter, or another surprise.

Discover new Montabi as you progress, and defeat and feed ’em to make them part of your team.

Train each one to beef up their strength, unearth new skills, and develop existing ones. Level up far enough, and your Montabi will evolve before your eyes, altering their appearance and further expanding their skillset.

How to play Montabi

“Creature-collector roguelike deckbuilder” is kind of a word salad, I know, but I promise gameplay is easier to understand.

Montabi battles are tactical and turn-based, with each fight set on a constricted 3×3 grid. These close quarters force players to strategize, synergize, and ultimately outsmart their opponents and achieve victory. Placement matters, too — get too close and risk getting sonned, but cowering in the corner can seriously stifle your attacks’ reach.

Battles can be brutal, so periodically stock up on HP-replacing supplies, like burgers and fries, using the in-game shop.

Montabi 1.0 features nearly two dozen starter creatures and more than 500 unique cards. Don’t let the confines of a nine-square battlemap fool you; no two rounds are alike.

Trust me, Trainer: time taming Montabi is time well spent.

Montabi is now available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, and PC via Steam for $19.99. Steam users can enjoy a celebratory 10 percent discount through Thursday, August 20. Pick up the game’s Deluxe Edition on Steam to get the base game and the complete soundtrack, as well as an adorable art book. Montabi Deluxe Edition is available now for $36.
